Kästner – brilliantly set to music

Julia Barthe, Soprano and Henning Lucius, Piano present a CD with premiere performances of three song cycles by the composer Wolfgang-Andreas Schultz. His oeuvre reconciles the modern and the traditional in a very personal musical language.

The production was enabled by a scholarship, given by the GVL, in the context of the german government's programme "Neustart Kultur".

The main work featured on this CD is a wonderful setting of Erich Kästner's well-loved collection of popular poems "Die dreizehn Monate" ("The thirteen months").
This is complimented by the song cycle "Vom Sterben der Natur" ("Nature's demise"), which takes Georg Friedrich Händel's "Verdi prati" ("Blossoming fields") from his opera "Alcina" as theme for variations in text and music. Three folksongs from the opera "Sturmnacht" ("Storm night") complete the programme.

Thematically, the songs lead the hearer on a journey, spanning descriptions of nature during the four seasons of the year in "Die Dreizehn Monate", over the progressive destruction of nature itself in the Händel-Variations, culminating in the annihilating powers of a deluge in the first of the "Sturmnacht"-Lieder.
